  • Step by Step Baby registration

I am a US citizen and my wife is Indonesian. My wife is about to have our baby. Talking within the next three or so weeks. Sorry if this is just a recycled question but I have searched this forum and just got even more confused. Can someone give me a step by step process of how to register everything for my baby from the very start to the very end? Are there deadlines for any of these steps? What are the official prices? For the Capil part, what documents and how many photocopies do I need? Do I go for the affidavit or US passport first? Does my wife and child need to go to the US Embassy with me? If so do I need to make a separate appointment for them? We live in West Jakarta. Thanks everyone for your kind help and sharing your experience.

Getting the Akte Kelahiran is the first step. You get it by bringing the Surat Keterangan Lahir issued by the hospital where your child was born, your marriage documents and personal IDs to the Dinas Kependudukan and Catatan Sipil. This will be required by the U.S. embassy to prove that the child is your child, and therefore eligible to apply for a U.S. passport. The process and required documents are listed on the U.S. Indonesia embassy website.

Really? So all I need at the Capil is my marriage document, KITAS (for me), KTP (for my wife), and passport (for me)? We won't need to bring KK from my wife, SKLD or KIP from me, or letters from RT/RW? Number of photo copies?

first get the birth confirmation from hospital or clinic, you need a paper then from kantor Lurah and then the Kecamatan (to do with Family Card) before you can register birth with Catatan Sipil. Take along your documents such as buku nikah, copy passport, fill out the forms and pick up the Birth Certificate in a few days, it costs about 75,000rp no more. Get it Laminated and take loads of copies, register the birth then with kantor Immigrasi (there is a time limit but dont worry about it). Begin the process at same time for Indonesian Passport for your baby, its easy, only 250,000, usual 3 stages of drop off - early morning photo and interview - afternoon pick up.

after all that is done, then go around to the US Embassy and follow the procedure as per website and other advices here. I am British and adhere to requirements of British Consulate. Dont use an Agent and dont pay over the odds! The step by step process is simple but a hassle of going from Hospital to Lurah to kecamat to Catsip Kantor Immigrasi and ultimately the Consulate, never just one trip except perhaps the Lurah and kecamat.

Wifes KTP and Family Card (Kartu Keluarga) plus original copies of yourself and copies and some matrai stamps if I am not mistaken. SKTT and SKLD not needed in the process.

Thank you so much mrcibubur. The murky process is starting to come into focus. Another question, do I need anything at the Lurah or Kecematan, i.e. letter from the RT/RW? Is the letter from the hospital enough? Also where I get confused is the process of the kantor Immigrasi and my embassy. More to the point the order in which these staps need to be taken. Do I go to the US Embassy first or kantor Immigrasi first? Thank you so much for your time answering my questions and thank you for sharing your experience.

Arif, concentrate on complying with the Indonesian process of things and then deal with the American side of things, there is plenty of time for that. Your child, when born, is entitled to dual nationality and therefore two passports, so just go with it.

Double check with your RT but I am pretty sure you do not need a letter from him for Lurah, just all your documents and the Certificate from the Hospital or Clinic. remember it is the Lurah for you where you live for registration and NOT where the baby is born, they are likely to be different, same for Kecmat and Catsip etc. Follow the line of your OWN immigration process.

Remember also, no more than a modest tip fee of 10,000rp max to the Lurah office. they issue on the spot a Surat which you take to the Kecamatan to get the Family Card changed, then you go with the documents to Catatan Sipil a day or so later to register the Birth. Drop off the documents, pay the fee and pick up in a week. No problem with that, then prepare yourself for Kantor Immigrasi - two things, first to register the birth with the usual Map folder and then in a separate exercise to apply for an Indonesian Passport. Get all the Forms (its a number 11 I think) and that will take a week, easy actually.

When all that is done, then take up matters with US Consulate. One problem solved, onto the next one!

                dear mrcibubur,

I submitted all the forms and documents already more than a month ago at CATATAN CIPIL @ Tangerang Selatan...

Other local friends said they waited more than 2 months. Is it different for expats or how is the normal procedure? I need to get it done as I want to make my babies passport.

                thanks alot

In my Catatan Sipil office at Gianyar it took only a few minutes for them to issue a Kutipan Akta Kelahiran for my daughter. While it might take more time depending on the kabupaten, I'm pretty sure they have a time limit to do so, set by law. And I believe it is less than a month. As I remember from Administrasi Kependudukan law (Tahun 2006, forgot the number but you can google it), most letters from Catatan Sipil have to be issued within a few days (7 or 14). But I don't remember for Akta Kelahiran.

It took just a few days also for us in Gianyar. We paid an agent something like Rp. 150,000 to do it for us. The last thing you want to do when your permata hati is newly arrived is go witness a show of molasses-like efficiency and put up with the khaki wearing, kumis-sporting pudgy bapak that blows smoke in your face while trying to shake you down.

This sentence might be unclear. I'm talking about THEIR time limit to issue letters from the day you reported, not your time limit to report.

To get a British passport for my son (3 years old and born here in Indonesia and with an Indonesian mother) will the British Embassy insist that I register him with them first? It's said not to be mandatory to register him but maybe I will have to do so to get the passport.

                        Thanks

Last year my Indonesian wife paid something like 300-400 ribu to get the AKTE Kelahiran for our son without using an agent. It seems too high to me. Now we have another child and are in the process of getting another AKTE Kelahiran. Anyone know how to check the official price for the AKTE Kelahiran in at the Capil in North Jakarta? Or if you have gotten an Akte Kelahiran from Capil, North Jakarta without an agent, how much did you pay? Any other suggestions on how to avoid getting overcharged? THanks.
