Marrying my Indonesian fiance in the UK

After a lot of thought we have decided we would like to marry in the UK. We only want to marry there, spend some time with family, do some sight seeing and then go back to Indonesia, stay 3 weeks, maybe 4. So my girlfriend will be applying for a Visitors Marriage Visa.

The one thing we are really concerned about is how can we proof we have made arrangements to marry and satisfy the UK Borders Agency. I am making some inquiries but from all the info I have seen we have to have to be in the UK to give notice of marriage.

Does anyone have any previous experience?

Would bookings for marquee for the wedding party be sufficient? printed email communications with my parents making plans for the wedding?

Any advice from people in the know would be gratefully received.

Try this link it might have useful advice, from my interpretation your Indonesian partner will need to be in the UK at the very least 3 weeks to meet the waiting period before marriage... I think it is 7 days before giving notice and 15 days after...

I would advise to give anything and everything you can that will support your claim.

You need to show bookings for the hotel/reception etc, Plus, the registrar or ceremony.

I think Bad_azz is right about the 3 weeks thing, but, different in Scotland. So, we hopped over the border and got married at the Anvil in Gretna Green - we loved it!

I can't show bookings for the regsitrar or ceremony because I can't give notice of marriage while I'm out of the country. But in Scotland it's different, we can give notice of marriage via post. Scotland is far from my home town, but it looks like the only way we can do it and be sure of evidence of marriage plans to satisfy UK Borders.

Make sure you get a pre-nup in case you want to buy land together.

if your partner stands to inherit any land in the future...it could have implications.
The pre nup must be made in Indonesia and written in Bahasa Indonesia for it to be of any use in the courts here.

me and my fiancee are looking to do the same thing, but are unsure on what visa my partner needs to get, this may come across as a silly question but does it have to be a marriage visa or can it be a different visor? what visor did your partner get? Ive read that the marriage visa you have to show income from the uk but i am working in Indonesia now so i dont earn enough to support the marriage visas needs.
please can you help as we are struggling to find the answer

It is much easier to get a UK Fiancee visa than one for Marriage Visa and this has been particularly so in the last couple of years with the introduction of a pre-marriage check to stop fake marriages and ultimately for foreigners to take a language test if intending to settle. Most applications for Marriage Visa fail, not because anything wrong with the marriage, but because insufficient documents are provided evidencing the position about the sponsors finance and income which i think you will find is pitched around 19,500 Pound Sterling per annum. If you work outside of Uk and do not have a permanent address in the Uk which you can show will be the parental home, you will also experience problems convincing to get the UK Marriage Visa (which is pretty expensive at nearly 1000 Pounds Sterling).

Fiancee Visa is the way to go but I echo other comments - prepare absolutely meticulously with all documents and present it like a Court case as if your life depends on it - because two lives will depend on it.

Marrying in Uk is also the right thing to do, in my opinion, because you can both keep your religious faith, if they are different eg Christian/Muslim and you should thereafter register the marriage with Indonesian Embassy in London as well as later here in Indonesia registering the marriage with Immigration and the Catatan Sipil relating to the jurisdiction of the Indonesian Spouse KTP. Follow other threads on the Forum about that in more detail.

We are applying for a Marriage Visitors Visa. We will only stay in UK short time and marry during that time. We have a huge file of supporting documents. Wish us luck.

good luck Ross1!!!! let us know how you get on! I think we will do the same visor as we can only stay for three weeks, and the other visa is if you plan to stay for longer. where and when are you planning to have your wedding?
